BLACK SASH MEDIA ALERT - Rights Groups to celebrate Cabinet's decision to approve the extension of the Child Support Grant to 18! - 26 October 2009

For Immediate Release: Monday, 26 October 2009

The Black Sash, the Alliance for Children's Entitlement to Social Security (ACESS) and the Children's Institute (UCT) will be holding a mass gathering outside the gates to Parliament tomorrow (Tuesday, 27 October 2009) to celebrate Cabinet's decision to approve the extension of the Child Support Grant (CSG) from 15 to 18 years.

We have campaigned tirelessly for this extension for more than a decade and expect more than 400 local supporters to join us between 12h00 and 13h00 to mark this significant milestone in our long journey to realise the Constitutional rights of all our children to social assistance.

At 12h45, we will hand over to the Acting Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Social Security (Vincent Magugula) a dossier of testimonies we have gathered over the past few months from parents and caregivers who lost the grant when their children turned 15. Their stories bare witness to the importance of Cabinet's decision to extend the grant.   Read the testimonies from parents and caregivers

We will also present our campaign report - “When the grant stops, the hope stops” - to the Portfolio Committee before the Medium Term Budget Policy Statement is presented by the Finance Minister at 14h00. We believe that the extension of the CSG to 18 will help restore hope to millions of poor and vulnerable families throughout South Africa. Read our Report to Parliament.

As part of the celebrations, we will be releasing more than a hundred yellow balloons (the symbol of our campaign) at 12h45 outside the gates of Parliament.
