Black Sash Media Statement: Eastern Cape ‘State of the Province’ Address
For immediate release: 18 February 2010
The Black Sash is eager to hear how Eastern Cape Premier Noxolo Kieviet intends implementing President Zuma’s promise to the nation last week to work “harder, smarter and faster.”
We agree with the President that 2010 must be a "year of action." We look forward to hearing from Premier Kieviet what action she will take to get our provincial government really working, as the President has instructed. Last year in her ‘State of the Province’ address, Premier Kieviet promised to “respond decisively to alleviate the plight of the poor in our province.” But poverty, inequality, unemployment and crime levels remain depressingly high in the Eastern Cape. We cannot afford to wait another year before dealing with the corruption, political intrigue and managerial incompetence that currently paralyses the efficient delivery of services to our people.
We need to hear tomorrow how the Premier is going to do to tackle this corruption and inefficiency in our public service? How she is going to deal with under-performing departments such as health? And when she going to remove or terminate the contracts of those senior public servants and municipal managers who are responsible for the collapse of the public service in the Eastern Cape?
The Black Sash also wants to know what action Premier Kieviet will take to create more decent and sustainable jobs in the province. As Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said yesterday in his Budget speech, "with jobs comes dignity, participation and prosperity.”
