The Black Sash calls on SASSA to urgently grant social relief of distress, equal in value to the Older Persons' Grant, to the over 100 000 vulnerable people who won't be receiving a social grant this month.
This relief should be given to the affected persons without any administrative delay, until they are enrolled on the new SASSA system.
Leonie Caroline of the Black Sash Cape Town Regional Office says, "We have been saddened by the administrative bungle that has caused such unnecessary hardship to elderly and ill Western Cape beneficiaries." This follows news that social grants will not be received this month by beneficiaries who are not physically able to go to SASSA centres to enrol on their new system and who were promised home visits. "It is therefore the most vulnerable of persons who are experiencing this real distress," says Caroline.
The Black Sash notes SASSA Western Cape's commitment to "rectify the situation" but urges SASSA to inform the public of the processes that will be undertaken to guarantee vital household income.
