George Bizos (November 1928 - September 2020)

11 September 2020

To the Bizos Family,

The Black Sash wishes to extend our sympathy and respect to the Bizos family at this time of his passing.

We mourn the ending of an exemplary life. George Bizos was one of the people who fostered the birth of the post-apartheid South Africa, contributing to the vision of a society which would respect human rights and liberties.

He brought to his long and illustrious career as a lawyer his entire commitment, his intellect and his energy, as well as his warmth and his humanity.  The people he represented were often at enormous risk of detention under terrible conditions, of long prison sentences or of capital punishment, and he dedicated his services to defending them.

His example inspired and encouraged new generations of lawyers who have carried forward his legacy.

We mourn the loss of an honourable man.

Yours sincerely,

Mary Burton
