My name is Ma-Ntuli. I live in Empangeni in Kwazulu Natal. I’m 49 years old. I was blessed with twins who are aged 15. They are both still at school. They are doing grade 9. I’m unemployed and my husband is also unemployed. We have no source of income. We depend on relatives who have good jobs in Durban to send us money. I also depend on my mother who is on old age pension. Our area is rural and there are no jobs.
My name is Leew Nedaline. I’m 36 years old. I live in Johannesburg in Tshepisong. I have 2 children aged 16 and 9. I’m unemployed. The father of my child left when she was young. He leaves in Venda and the does not support the child in any way. I survive by doing piece jobs. I mostly get washing piece jobs. People will pay me R100 for doing their washing; sometimes if they are generous they will pay me R150.
My name is Khethiwe Bhengu. I’m 34 years old. I live in Durban. I’m a single mother of 4 children. My children are 15, 8, 6 and 2 years. I’m unemployed. The father of my children is self employed. He works as a house builder but he never provides the children with any financial support. I depend on the grant received by my 3 children. I also stay with my mother who is on old age pension. Her old age pension buys us food.
My name is Vuyani Gilagila. I’m 36 years old. I live in Cape Town. I have a 10 year old child. My child gets the child support grant. I stay with my two sisters, who between them have 4 children. Their children are aged 14, 13, 8, and 4. 3 of these children are at school. My sisters are not working and I’m also not working. I sometimes do piece jobs in construction so that I can assist them with their children.
My name is Sarah Mohati. I’m a 36 year old mother of 2. My children are aged 15 and 7. I live in Johannesburg with my children and my partner. I’m not working and my boyfriend is also not working. We both have no source of income. My 15 year old child got her grant when she was 10 years. She has always depended on the grant for School uniform and the grant also assisted with food in the house.
