Black Sash Graphic or Digital Design Intern

One-year paid internship opportunity at the Black Sash National Office in Cape Town, Mowbray. 

 Black Sash works towards the realisation of socio-economic rights, with emphasis on social security and social protection for the most vulnerable, particularly women and children Black Sash’s Education and Training Programme works to develop rights information materials to support the training of community-based partners and paralegals, as well as information materials for dissemination broadly through various media. We, therefore, seek to appoint a qualified intern to develop and produce materials that are fresh and creative. 

 The core responsibilities of the one-year paid internship starting in January 2023 will be to strengthen Black Sash’s education and training programme, as well as our communications and media work. Using creative means, the intern will be responsible for expanding on our existing education and training materials development, enhancing our campaigns and advocacy work 

 Deliverables will include:  

Assist the Education and Training Manager in the following: 

  • Use art to amplify the voices of the most vulnerable in their struggles to access basic services in South Africa, with an emphasis on women and children 
  • Develop popular education materials that can be used in the advancement of human rights work 
  • Work towards simplifying complex issues and making it more accessible to the broader community  
  • Support and at times conduct training and education events,   
  • Creatively engage community-based organisations and social movements with the view to strengthen Black Sash campaigns, and  
  • Provide support for the implementation of a media and social media strategy and content for programme work and campaigns.  

 Some key issues that the intern will creatively work on include:   

  • Comprehensive social security and the pathway to implementation.  
  • Permanent basic income support for the unemployed, expanding social assistance and working towards a universal basic income.   
  • The introduction of automation and digitisation in the social security space.    

Minimum Requirements:  

  • Recent design graduate from a tertiary institution 
  • History of community service 
  • Good command of spoken and written English and at least one other South African language  
  • Willing to travel
